The City Gate joined the Young’s estate in late 2001. It is just a few minutes’ walk from the cathedral and all the main tourist attractions of this compact and historic city.

The City Gate is a fine Georgian building, incorporating some of the ancient city wall into its cellar – hence its name as it is on the site of one of the old gates into Exeter. It has three distinct eating and drinking areas off the main bar, a lovely cellar bar and a large paved and decked garden with its own bar in the summer.

It had been insensitively decorated and fitted out, but Young’s restored it to its traditional glory and added 14 three-star bedrooms. It was officially reopened as a hotel in 2003 by the Lord Major of Exeter, Councillor Mrs Margaret Danks.
