Plan Your Trip

Plan your trip at the City Gate

Exeter is the capital city of Devon and is very easy to explore on foot right from the front door of the Townhouse. We are in a quiet corner of the city centre yet only a few minutes stroll from the stunning Cathedral, Museum, Quayside, University, train stations, bus station, shopping centres and excellent pubs & restaurants. Exeter has been a Cathedral town since 1050 and the present Cathedral was built in the 14th century. It is one of the greatest Medieval cathedrals in England and the only Cathedral in England to have twin Norman towers and has the longest unbroken vaulted roof of any in the country.

Exeter boasts all the major High Street names as well as over 350 independent shops, pubs and restaurants. We have listed the best restaurants in our welcome guide to Exeter, found in every room. Exeter’s Gandy Street has a great variety of boutique clothes shops and good bars and restaurants. For arts, crafts and collectables, try Exeter’s West Quarter or the Quayside. Or travel slightly further afield and make an afternoon of it by browsing antique shops, art galleries and boutiques of the historic riverside town of Topsham, a 12 minute train ride south of Exeter. The City is brimming with history and heritage, with many visitor attractions to keep you entertained.

From the magnificent Cathedral, the historic Quayside ,The Underground Passages ,The Royal Albert Memorial Museum there’s so much to see and do in this fascinating city.

You can also go one of the many walking tours. For the children there is Crealy Theme Park which has roller coasters, other rides, adventure park and a zoo.

Farmers Market

Shoppers keen on sampling West Country foods can buy a wide range of produce at the Exeter Farmers’ Market. The market is a vibrant and enjoyable place to buy and sell and meet with producers who offer a delicious range of foods such as venison, pork, lamb, beef, chicken, organic fruit and vegetables, apple juice, fish, chicken, preserves, cakes, bread, pies and much more.
The market takes place every Thursday from 9.00am to 2.00pm on the corner of Fore Street and South Street.

Dartmoor National park

Dartmoor National Park’s landscape is as dramatic as its weather. From its striking granite tors to steep wooded river valleys and from swathes of heather covered moorland to tucked away villages and hamlets. It is a land of contrasts – some people go to experience the tranquillity by getting away from it all, whilst others go to get active.

Jurassic Coast

The Jurassic Coast is a Walk Through Time. With its rocks and fossils we can uncover detailed stories from Earth’s ancient past. Through its landslides, cliffs and beaches we can learn about the natural processes that formed the coast and continue to shape the world today.
